Hygienist cleaning a patient’s teeth

Regular dental examinations and x-rays are the best way to ensure that you have a healthy smile. We start each examination with a professional cleaning so that we are able to examine your mouth and teeth closely. It is our goal to find and correct any problems before they become major ones!

X-Rays are used to examine the inside of your teeth. We are hoping to be able to catch any problems that we can’t see with the naked eye! Using radiology, we are able to see which teeth are developing cavities. We may also see some teeth or gum areas that may require some extra work.

We know and understand the importance of good preventative care. Part of this includes brushing and flossing your teeth properly. Good dental preventative care is really important to ensure a healthy mouth, including your gums and teeth.

It is important to brush your teeth at least twice daily to help remove plaque and food particles that get stuck to your teeth. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for two minutes (or longer), though most people rush through this time. You need to make sure that you reach every side of each tooth, including the inside and outside. To help keep your breath fresh, you should also brush your tongue. Then, you can begin flossing.

It is recommended by the American Dental Association that you should floss your teeth at least once daily. Flossing is done to remove plaque that gets stuck in between your teeth. It also gets rid of any plaque that your toothbrush missed (or can’t get to)! If you don’t floss, you will have more problems with tartar, cavities, and even gum disease.

Though many people hate to do it, flossing is really necessary. You can use dental floss or even a pick that is specially designed for flossing. Though flossing shouldn’t be painful, it can feel different and awkward so it is important to keep at it. After a few days or weeks, it will become part of your dental routine.

We are proud to specialize in pediatric dentistry. Our entire staff is very good with children. We know and understand how children think so that we can start them off right. We want them to associate the dentist’s office as a good place, instead of being scared. We take our time with each patient so that they have an enjoyable visit.

Our dentists (and entire staff) understand the importance of good oral health even as young children. They have specialized training with primary teeth. They are here to help protect and restore children’s teeth so that they can speak and eat easily, as well as having a wonderful smile.

We will work with parents to ensure that their children are taking good care of their teeth at home. We also monitor for any problems so we can catch them early. We will work with your child’s regular doctor if needed for any problems.

When we apply a dental sealant, we paint a plastic coating on top of your teeth. This makes your teeth smooth getting rid of the rough edges, depressions, and grooves that are commonly found on teeth. It is essentially a protective coating against tooth decay and cavities.

The most common place to paint sealants is on back teeth since they are often irregular. They can also be very hard to reach, even if you brush your teeth regularly. We use it more on children though we do perform sealants on adults too!

As dentists, we are determined to make sure your mouth and teeth are well protected during sports activities, no matter what your passion is. To do this, we offer many different types of mouth guards, depending on the types of activities in which you are involved. There are some mouth guards for low-impact sports and others for high-impact sports.

Mouth guards not only protect your mouth and teeth, but also have other purposes. Mouth guards will help decrease the impact if you get hit in the jaw. They have also been shown to increase an athlete’s performance.

Many people clench their teeth while playing, which can give them temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). Clenching your jaw the whole time can be quite exhausting. Mouth guards help to relax your jaw, allowing you to completely focus on the game!

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

It can be beneficial to use a guard, or covering, to protect your teeth from grinding while sleeping. Similar to how a mouthguard protects teeth during sports, this layer prevents damage to the teeth that can occur naturally.

There are a wide variety of different types of mouthguards, ranging from pre-formed pieces to ones that are custom fitted to your teeth and jaws. Some of these can even be formed at home through a boil-and-bite process. Typically these mouthguards cover your upper teeth only, but in certain instances they are used for the lower teeth as well.

Grinding of teeth can be a serious problem that does major damage to your teeth, so wearing a nightguard is an effective way to prevent this damage.

It is our goal to give all of our patients smiles that they are proud to have. To help our patients, we are proud to offer many different types of dental restorations depending on their specific needs. We are here to help patients who suffer from broken and missing teeth.

Our most common procedure is a filling. We can fill in any decay, plus we also fill in any teeth that are broken so that they continue to look natural. With missing teeth, we have more options. Bridges can be used to bridge the gap between your teeth. These bridges get cemented in, usually to your other teeth.

We can also get you dentures. There are two types, partial and full, depending on how many teeth you are actually missing. More and more dentists are starting to recommend implants because, with the right care, they should last you for the rest of your life. Implants are placed in your jawbone and act just like your natural tooth roots. Once the implants heal, crowns are placed, giving you replacement teeth which look and feel natural.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

Dental fillings are used to fill cavities and repair cracked or broken teeth. Fillings can be done with gold, porcelain, or silver amalgam, but is most commonly done with materials called composite resin fillings that are designed to match the color of your teeth.

Additional steps are required for tooth-colored fillings because it requires multiple layers and a special light to dry and harden the area around the filling.

To fill a tooth, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the area around the tooth. A laser or air abrasion instrument will be used to remove the decayed area and your dentist will prepare the space for the filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. In some cases, your dentist may apply a liner for your tooth called a glass ionomer to help protect the tooth and nerve before the tooth is filled. After your filling is complete, most dentists will polish the tooth to make it feel smooth and natural.

The procedure can vary in time and cost depending on the extent of the damage to the tooth.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

Dental inlays and onlays are considered a conservative method of treating damaged teeth. They are used instead of placing a crown. Some dentists even use inlays and onlays to treat tooth decay. Instead of filling in the tooth, your dentist may use dental inlays and onlays.

Dental inlays and onlays are made in a dental lab and then fitted to your tooth. They are then bonded to your tooth. The difference between inlays and onlays depends on how much of your tooth it covers. If the material is bonded to the center of the tooth, it is considered an inlay. If it covers your whole tooth or more than one point of your tooth, it is considered an onlay.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

A tooth can lose its normal shape and size for a variety of reasons. A crown covers your tooth to help restore its original shape and size. Crowns can also be used to make teeth stronger and look better.

Crowns have a variety of uses. In some cases that require a large filling, there isn’t enough tooth remaining to keep the filling in place. A crown can strengthen the tooth and hold the filling. Crowns can also protect teeth that are weak, or help fix ones that are broken. Discolored or misshaped teeth can be covered by a crown, as can dental implants.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

Bridges can solve the issue of missing teeth. Similar to dentures, bridges replace gaps in your smile with artificial teeth. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain, gold, and alloys.

Bridges can be removable or fixed. Removable bridges can be taken out and cleaned by patients, whereas fixed bridges have to be removed by a dentist. Bridges can be implanted to the jaw or under the gums. With so many options, it is important to consult with your dentist about which type of bridge is best for you.

You should always keep your current teeth healthy and strong, but a bridge can help if you do lose teeth.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

When infection damages the pulp of the tooth your dentist or an endodontist may have to perform root canal therapy to save your tooth.

This treatment involves opening the tooth; removing the damaged pulp from the inside; and then disinfecting, shaping, filling and sealing the tooth. Depending on how much infection is present, you may be put on a medicine regimen prior to the procedure. After root canal therapy, the tooth may need to be restored with a crown for protection. After that, the tooth will continue to function like your other natural teeth.

Endodontists are experienced in emergency pain control, and the root canal procedure itself is usually painless. Our staff is specially trained to work with patients to manage pain, anxiety, and fear, and understand that doing so is an important part of the root canal therapy process. We want our patients to get back to being pain free and healthy as quickly as possible.

Removable dental replacements, or dentures, are a common service that we provide for our clients. We provide both complete dentures (for when all teeth are missing) and partial dentures (for when some teeth are missing).

There are both conventional and immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and are placed 8 to 12 weeks after removal. Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.

Patients may need dentures for a variety of reasons. We promise to communicate with you throughout the process in order to provide you with the best dental care possible. Dentures can allow patients to use their mouths more normally again, like they were able to before losing their teeth.

Miniature implants give you confidence! With miniMARK™ dental implants your dentures are securely anchored, giving you absolute confidence; confidence to laugh and smile; confidence to speak; confidence to eat all your favorite foods.

Denture stability is now more affordable. There is nothing more secure then dentures that are supported by dental implants; however, the cost is often prohibitive. This is not the case with the miniMARK implant system. There are several factors that make this type of dental solution much more affordable, the biggest one being time! The miniMARK implant can be placed in a single office visit.

Your choice, apples or apple sauce! Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to enjoy all your favorite foods again without the hassle and worries that come along with unsecure dentures? The miniMARK system can grant you the freedom to enjoy these foods once again!

Why miniature implants? Implants need healthy bone to adhere to. In some cases, there just isn’t enough bone to adhere to. This is often corrected with a more invasive procedure to expand and grow new bone. This can take several months before the implant can be placed. With miniMARK miniature dental implants, they can be successfully installed into areas where a traditional implants can not. This simple procedure is often done in a single visit.

80%+

of the adult population has periodontal disease to one degree or another. After age 30, bone disease is the major reason for tooth loss.

Ask about gum care

Phase I Periodontal Therapy is a procedure used to help stop the progression of your periodontal disease. Our goal is to help avoid periodontal surgery in the future – a cost of over six thousand dollars.

Our procedure consists of scaling and root planning, use of our soft tissue diode laser and placement of an antimicrobial agent.

Scaling and Root Planing is done by quadrant (your mouth has four quadrants). You will be given a local anesthetic to make you comfortable. The roots of all teeth are scaled to remove all mechanical irritants (tartar) which aide in periodontal infection. All teeth are scaled regardless of pocket depth/bone loss. This is done to prevent the periodontal bacteria from colonizing in any healthy areas of your mouth.

Questions? Call (508) 564-6663.

Periodontal bone disease is an infection of bone and supporting structures of your teeth. Before the age of 30, decay is the major reason for tooth loss and after age 30, bone disease is the major reason for tooth loss. It is estimated that over 80% of the adult population has periodontal disease to one degree or another.

A laser is a conservative, non-surgical treatment for your periodontal disease. After removing the tartar and calculus a laser is used to selectively remove diseased or infected tissues lining the pockets around your teeth. At the same time the laser will kill the bacteria that cause your periodontal disease and promote healing of your gums around your teeth. Some lasers can help increase circulation and collagen formation at the bottom of your periodontal pockets and help revive or rejuvenate your attachment. This specialized treatment is usually performed multiple times over a period of a few weeks.

Uses for lasers in dentistry: herpetic lesion removal (cold sores), tooth desensitizing, frenectomy, gingivectomy, incisional biopsy, crown lengthening, periodontal tissue therapy, bacteria reduction.

Advantages of the diode laser: precision removal of only diseased tissue; bacterial elimination of the pocket; simultaneous clotting of blood vessels for speedy recovery; minimal, if any, post-operative discomfort; stimulation of bone-regenerating cells. For more information visit the Academy of Laser Dentistry at Laserdentistry.org.

What is ARESTIN®? ARESTIN® is a prescription antibiotic approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It is used together with scaling and root planing (SRP) and is placed by your dentist for the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease.

Occlusal equilibration is a term used in dentistry to discuss the balancing of the bite relationship. The lower jaw is a “u-shaped” bone, which has two joints at each end. When the jaw system is functioning properly, the lower jaw is able to freely hinge the joints and close together with the lower teeth contacting the upper teeth very evenly all the way around the arch. This creates a “solid bite.” When there is a discrepancy in the bite relationship to the fully seated joints, then problems can develop. If any teeth interfere with a healthy jaw relationship during the closure, the jaw will have to shift in order to fully close the teeth all the way together. This shifting of the jaw creates stress on the whole system. We will see manifestations of this shifting as muscle tenderness, headaches, clenching and grinding of the teeth. Joint discomfort, wearing of the teeth, looseness, chipping and breakage of the teeth are also common problems when there is a bite disharmony.

If these signs of instability are found as we examine your mouth, we then consider occlusal equilibration as a possible remedy. We study the bite relationship by the way of mounted, diagnostic study casts of your mouth. In this way we can determine if adjustment of the biting surfaces to balance your bite will correct the problem. Once studied, we can proceed with adjusting your bite relationship to re-establish harmony in the biting system. We do this carefully— reshaping the biting surfaces of individual teeth, which may be interfering with the proper joint/bite relationship.

Establishing this stability in the system can prevent or reduce many problems that are serious in nature: temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD); muscle-tension headaches; severe wear of your natural teeth, as well as loose teeth; chipping/breakage of teeth; gum recession and other associated problems; grooves forming on exposed root surfaces.

We will discuss with you in detail our findings of your individual needs and why we are recommending occlusal equilibration. The cost of this procedure is approximately $1800.00 and may not be covered by insurance.

Veneers are thin shells intended to cover the front side of teeth to hide stains, chips, decay, or irregularities. A dental technician uses a model created by a dentist to make a custom shell out of specials materials.

Because veneers require removing some enamel, they are usually permanent. Your dentist will typically recommend avoiding food and drink that will stain your veneers. Veneers can chip or crack, but overall the results are worthwhile and many people are thrilled with their new smile.

Veneers are an alternative to more expensive crowns. Porcelain veneers require multiple visits, but they last longer and provide a more stable color than bonding.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Skin Rejuvenation is a leading edge natural approach in anti-ageing facial and body rejuvenation using the patient’s own blood cells. PRP is the concentrated part of blood that contains the platelets which are the key to the body’s ability to stop bleeding and repair damaged blood vessels and cells in the body. Platelets contain substances called growth factors that activate and rejuvenate cells in the body to regenerate new tissue.

PRP rejuvenation works very differently from Botox, Dysport and Dermal Fillers. With PRP Therapy, the patient is injected with a natural product produced from his or her own body. The PRP works to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal, which provides overall facial rejuvenation.

Benefits: improves tone, texture and brightness of skin; skin is firmed and tightened; wrinkles and lines are softened; skin’s rosy glow is restored; skin softness is increased; facial volume depletion can be improved; sun-damage, acne scars, rosacea, dark circles and hyper pigmentation are also improved.

Not recommended for: smokers, drug and heavy alcohol users; individuals with skin disease (SLE-porphyria, allergies); cancer patients; individuals having chemotherapy; individuals with severe metabolic and systemic disorders; individuals with abnormal platelet function (i.e. blood disorders); individuals on anticoagulant and anti-platelet therapy – aspirin, Warfarin, dipyridamole or clopidogril; individuals with sepsis, acute and chronic infection.

The procedure: after numbing the area being treated with a topical ointment, the PRP is injected or applied to the skin using a micro-needling device. Cosmetic PRP is a simple and safe procedure. The most common side effects are mild swelling and bruising that may last three to seven days. Applying cold compresses, keeping the head elevated, and using arnica cream can minimize swelling and bruising.

Results: for optimum results, a course of 3-5 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart is advisable. Improvement of skin tone and texture begin to show 3-4 weeks after the treatment session and continue to improve with time. Full collagen regeneration will be completed within about 3 months. To maintain the result, touch-up treatments are recommended at an interval of 6-24 months depending on a patient’s age and skin condition.

Dr. Murphy and her staff is committed to providing you with the highest quality care possible in a relaxing and caring environment. Our hygienists, assistants, and front office staff are helpful and friendly. We are always available to answer your questions, explain treatment options, and address any concerns you may have. Many of our patients have commented that they have never felt as relaxed during treatment as they have here.

As a general dentist Dr. Murphy can take care of all of your general dental needs including basic preventative and periodontal care, root canals, composite or amalgam fillings and cosmetic bonding. At your first visit, we will do a thorough, comprehensive exam, x-rays if needed, and clean your teeth. Your second appointment will be to sit and talk with Dr. Murphy about the findings of your exam, and any treatment that is necessary.

One of the aspects of dentistry Dr. Murphy finds especially enjoyable is designing new smiles for those looking for a smile “makeover”. There are many options available to whiten/brighten, reshape teeth, and create an esthetically pleasing smile for you. Veneers and Lumineers are increasingly popular and an excellent way to change the appearance of teeth with little or no preparation to natural teeth.

Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, as well as the American Dental Association, American Academy of Laser Dentistry, Chamber of Commerce, Academy of General Dentistry and the Massachusetts Dental Society.

Post-op instructions

Congratulations! You’ve just experienced a revolutionary tooth whitening procedure. The next 48 hours are important in enhancing and maximizing your whitening results for a long lasting, bright and healthy smile.

During the first 24 hours after whitening treatment, some patients can experience some tooth sensitivity or pain. This is normal and is usually mild, but it can be worse in susceptible individuals. Normally, tooth sensitivity or pain following a treatment subsides within 24 hours, but in rare cases can persist for longer periods of time. If you do, take an over-the-counter pain reliever (one you would use for a headache).

For the next 48 hours, avoid dark staining substances:

  • Red wine, cola, coffee and tea
  • Berries such as cherries, blueberries, strawberries
  • Tobacco products
  • Red sauces, mustard or ketchup, soy sauce
  • If it will stain your clothes, it will eventually stain your teeth

Additional ways to maintain your smile:

  • Avoid staining related habits.

FAQs

Questions we hear often

We know that people can have many questions about visiting the dentist and about dental health. Here are a few of the most common questions that we are asked:

Our office uses Zoom Whitening. It provides a safe and effective tooth whitening system that predictably removes internal and external stains from teeth. Philips Zoom is not only proven to whiten teeth up to eight shades, it’s also safe. While other whitening products can harm teeth and gums, using Philips Zoom with Relief ACP actually gives you greater luster and protects enamel. Philips Zoom is only available at a dentist’s office to ensure optimum safety, and comes in different treatment types and strengths to fit your lifestyle and sensitivity.

Some teeth are naturally too pigmented or stained as they develop. Exposure to coffee, tea, juices, soda, or tobacco accounts for much of the darkening as we age. Tooth discoloration sometimes happens from minerals antibiotic (tetracycline) or an excess of fluoride taken internally during tooth development. Old fillings, tooth nerve damage or trauma to teeth can also account for darkening.

We love children! We generally start seeing them for their first dental appointment at about 3 years old.

Seven suggestions to make your child’s first dental visit easier:

  1. Bring them to your hygiene visit to show them how easy an appointment is.
  2. Explain what a dentist does in simple, positive terms.
  3. “Play” dentist at home, giving the child a sense of what the dentist will do.
  4. Describe dental instruments and how they help the dentist.
  5. Explain the X-rays “take pictures” of the teeth.
  6. Never bribe a child to visit the dentist or use the threat of a visit as punishment.
  7. Above all, parents should be careful to not pass on any fears of the dentist to their children.

One “rite of passage” looked forward to by most children is losing their baby teeth. The excitement of the tooth fairy and the feeling of becoming a “big girl” or “big boy” is a fun milestone.

You can expect the first baby teeth, the central incisors (the “A’s”) to be lost at ages 6-7. Next, usually, go the lateral incisors (“B’s”) at ages 7-8. The cuspids (“C’s”) are lost between ages 10 and 12 while the first molars (“D’s”) are shed between 9 and 11. The second molars (“E’s”) also go between ages 10-12.

The first large, adult teeth erupt at about age 6. These come in behind all of the baby teeth. These “six year molars” are actually the adult first molars. These teeth usually have very deep grooves and are very prone to decay. When these teeth first come into the mouth, they need to be protected immediately with protective plastic coatings called “sealants.” Sealants are absolutely necessary to protect the integrity of your child’s teeth.

Permanent teeth often come behind baby teeth. It is a normal occurrence for the permanent lower central incisors to erupt behind the primary lower central incisors (“A’s”), especially in the lower arch. Usually, these baby teeth will be lost without a problem because the permanent teeth resorb the roots of the primary teeth enough to loosen them.

The back teeth are less likely to have this type of eruption pattern. Normally, the roots of the primary (baby) molars (typically, 3 roots on an upper molar and 2 roots on a lower molar) straddle the developing permanent premolar. As the permanent premolar erupts, the roots of the primary molars are resorbed, resulting in the shedding of the tooth.

If the baby teeth seem to have no desire to leave, or if the adult tooth does not follow the loss of a baby tooth within a “reasonable” period, give us a call or mention it at their next hygiene visit. We may need to take an X-ray to determine what’s going on.

By the age of 11-13, twenty eight permanent teeth are usually in place. “Wisdom teeth,” the third molars, appear around age 17, or they may not appear at all. When appropriate, we take a special X-ray to determine if these teeth are present and their position.

If your child gets hit or falls and the mouth is damaged, here’s what to do:

Tooth completely knocked out: phone your dentist immediately; time is very important! Find the tooth or teeth and put them in a glass of water or milk. Bring them with you to your emergency appointment. Don’t wipe or clean them in any way! If your office is closed, call the emergency number. The tooth (if in time) can be re-implanted, braced, or splinted and be useful for years to come.

Tooth fractured down to the gum line: hold a tissue or gauze over the area (have the child bite down). Phone the dentist or emergency number immediately. Depending on the way the tooth was hit, the root can be saved.

Tooth chipped: make sure the piece of tooth is not in the mouth. Phone the dentist immediately and get an appointment as soon as possible but it is not usually a dire emergency.

Tooth banged hard and loose: do not wiggle it or eat on it. In many cases the tooth will tighten back up in the socket if it is not continually wiggled. Call the office for an appointment. We may try to take an X-ray of the tooth. This is not always possible with young children. You’ll be advised to keep an eye on the tooth for a sign of color change or a bubble on the gum line.
